Catholic Church and the Italian public television. An enduring relation with an interlude: the Council

The article presents the entanglement of the Catholic Church and the media by focusing on the case of the Second Vatican Council and the television broadcast of its events. The mass media attention of the council stimulated, according to the author, a double level: the media conveyed more information about the church event than it had ever done before, but at the same time, the mass media influenced the discussion of the council fathers. La liturgia eucaristica della domenica è uno dei programmi più duraturi della televisione pub­blica italiana. Nuova documentazione rinvenuta in archivi sia pubblici sia privati sta dando voce ai professionisti e manager della RAI che lavorarono alla realizzazione del programma. Questi documenti gettano luce inoltre sull’intervento diretto delle autorità ecclesiastiche nell’evitare la nascita di una forma di “litur-tainment”. L’articolo dunque intende ricostruire la storia della trasmissione della messa della domenica negli anni Cinquanta, prendendo in considerazione il dibattito intra-ecclesiastico, la sua natura eterogenea (liturgica, pastorale, teologica, televisiva e comunicativa) e illustrando il coinvolgimento e il ruolo del mondo cattolico nella nascita della televisione italiana.The Sunday Mass is one of the most enduring programmes of RAI, the Italian public broadcaster. New documentation recently found in both institutional and private archives gives voice to the practitioners and managers who worked for the programme. These documents shed light on the direct intervention of the ecclesiastical authorities in avoiding the emergence of a sort of “litur-tainment”. Therefore, the article aims to reconstruct the history of the Sunday Mass broadcasting in the 1950s, taking into account the intra-ecclesial debate and its multifaceted aspects (liturgical, pastoral, theological and more specifically about TV and communication). As such, the essay illustrates the involvement of the Catholic world to the birth of the Italian public television

Novel Perspectives for the Management of Multilingual and Multialphabetic Heritages through Automatic Knowledge Extraction: The DigitalMaktaba Approach

The linguistic and social impact of multiculturalism can no longer be neglected in any sector, creating the urgent need of creating systems and procedures for managing and sharing cultural heritages in both supranational and multi-literate contexts. In order to achieve this goal, text sensing appears to be one of the most crucial research areas. The long-term objective of the DigitalMaktaba project, born from interdisciplinary collaboration between computer scientists, historians, librarians, engineers and linguists, is to establish procedures for the creation, management and cataloguing of archival heritage in non-Latin alphabets. In this paper, we discuss the currently ongoing design of an innovative workflow and tool in the area of text sensing, for the automatic extraction of knowledge and cataloguing of documents written in non-Latin languages (Arabic, Persian and Azerbaijani). The current prototype leverages different OCR, text processing and information extraction techniques in order to provide both a highly accurate extracted text and rich metadata content (including automatically identified cataloguing metadata), overcoming typical limitations of current state of the art approaches. The initial tests provide promising results. The paper includes a discussion of future steps (e.g., AI-based techniques further leveraging the extracted data/metadata and making the system learn from user feedback) and of the many foreseen advantages of this research, both from a technical and a broader cultural-preservation and sharing point of view
